ADVANCED LEVEL – C2 Mastery

C2.1 (50 hours)

Course Description.

Topics – unit 1: Esterofilia” (Extereophilia); unit 2: “È la scienza, bellezza!”(It’s Science, Beauty!); unit 3: “Edizione straordinaria” (Extraordinary Edition).

Grammatical and lexical aspects – review of previous content, invariable nouns, the suffix filia and the prefix pseudo-, verbs that want the preposition di (of), partitive relative pronouns, the false negation, verbs that change meaning when followed by the subjunctive, the analogy, the complex sentence, special uses of the conditional, the narrative imperfect and other special uses, the infinitive in secondary sentences, punctuation, differences between written and oral language, foreign words and borrowings, polysemy of animal names, internet neologisms.

Course Objectives.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. read texts, listen, and understand idiomatic expressions concerning cities and countries of the world, understand Italianized linguistic borrowings, understand neologisms and expressions of a political or managerial nature.
  2. discuss foreignness, talk about the relationship between one’s own country and the rest of the world, and support one’s opinions, tell minimizing or exaggerating.
  3. read texts, listen to, and understand audio-visual sources pertaining to science, understand idiomatic expressions and idioms derived from “mathematical language.”
  4. communicate about science-related topics, discuss scientific inventions, orally summarize a written text, speak in analogies
  5. read texts, listen to, and understand audio-visual sources focused on journalism, understand expressions and terms from journalistic jargon, and know how to use some in spoken language as well
  6. report unconfirmed news and dramatize a narrative.
  7. understand social media Italian, write about social media.
  8. use punctuation correctly.

This course is for those who have knowledge of Italian that would allow them to access this level or those who would benefit from a review from this level.

C2.2 (50 hours)

Course Description.

Topics -Unit 4: “Letteratura come cura” (Literature as a cure); unit 5: “A crepapelle”(Bust a gut laughing); unit 6: “First take is a wrap!” (Buona la prima).

Grammatical aspects – False alterations, different uses of che (that/what)), different uses of an implied verb, insights into the reflexive pronoun, the intensity of adjectives, prepositional locutions, conjunctions nonostante (notwithstanding) and malgrado (in spite of), the incidental sentence, duplication of a noun, an adjective, an adverb, special use of the pronoun chi (who).

Course Objectives.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. read texts, listen to, and understand audio-visual sources devoted to literature, recognize different textual genres by style, follow the thread of a discourse despite digressions. understand the intentions the author expresses through significant quotation marks.
  2. talk about literature with appropriate vocabulary, talk about literary genres by expressing one’s preferences, give complex advice on books to read “as a cure,” know how to use in everyday Italian expressions derived from some literary characters and adjectives derived from some authors.
  3. reading texts, listening to and understanding audio-visual sources focusing on different genres of humor, understanding the linguistic mechanisms behind laughter.
  4. make humor, know how to use ironic intonation, know how to interject irreverent expressions when necessary, summarize an oral text, communicate intensity in a speech.
  5. talk about stereotypes related to Italy through the description of the “average person” and make a comparison with one’s own country
  6. read texts, listen to and understand audio-visual sources dedicated to cinema to the world of ‘Italian, the most famous directors and actors; recognize different film genres.
  7. communicate using terminology related to the sphere of cinema, express one’s tastes about film genres, directors and actors.
  8. taking notes, summarizing a text.

C2.3 (50 hours)

Course Description.

Topics – unit 7: “C’era una volta” (Once upon a time); unit 8: “Uguale per tutti!(Equal for everyone!); unit 9: “Dica trentatré” (Say thirty-three); unit 10: “Terra del sì” (Land of yes).

Grammatical aspects – the relative che (than), the determinative article before possessives with special relations of kinship, the omission of the article, the remote past tense, the verb do + infinitive, hyponyms of the verb do, implied subordinate propositions, phrasal verbs, uses of the adverb già (already), the double negation, the suffix –fobia, prefixes of Greek and Latin derivation, the tonic and graphic accent, verb duplication, the form we + impersonal, the relative pronoun il quale (which), geosynonyms

Course Objectives.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. read texts, listen to audio-visual sources and understand the events narrated in a fairy tale, be familiar with children’s books and collections of fairy tales by the most representative Italian writers.
  2. narrate using terminology related to the fairy tale, summarize in a short but intense way, know how to read a fairy tale by changing the tone of voice to make the reading more engaging.
  3. read texts, listen to, and understand audio-visual sources devoted to the legal sphere and its vocabulary, understand bureaucratic language.
  4. interpret the meaning of a law and comment on it by expressing one’s opinions, give reasons for an opinion, a decision.
  5. read texts, listen to, and understand audio-visual sources devoted to medicine, understand a diagnosis or prescription.
  6. talk about health problems correctly using vocabulary from the world of medicine, speak in euphemisms to mitigate an unpleasant or uncomfortable concept, describe one’s lifestyle related to nutrition and exercise.
  7. read texts, listen to and understand audio-visual sources devoted to different Italian dialects, recognize different regional pronunciation accents of Italian, know geosynonyms indicating the same object, know the differences between Northern and Southern Italy
  8. talk about the differences between the North and the South and make a comparison between the North and the South of one’s own country, talk about one’s own relationship with learning foreign languages, express one’s opinion about the advantages gained for studying Italian, and report one’s own learning strategies.
