“È piccerella” is a 1922 silent film directed by Elvira Notari, considered the first Italian female filmmaker. Inspired by the song of the same name by Libero Bovio and Salvatore Gambardella, the movie tells the tragic love story of Tore, an honest young Neapolitan man, and Margaretella, a capricious and manipulative girl. To win Margaretella’s love, Tore resorts to stealing his mother’s jewelry and squandering the family’s resources. Their relationship spirals into personal and familial ruin, culminating in an extreme act during a religious procession. The film is praised for its authentic depiction of early 20th-century Naples and the emotional intensity of its characters.
