XXV SLIM | New Italian Stage in the World

Nuova scena italiana nel mondo

Under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy

New Italian Stage in the World
Gulbenkian Theatre – Beirut

As part of the 25th Italian Language Week in the World, dedicated to the theme “Italophonia: Language Beyond Borders”, the Italian Cultural Institute of Beirut presents the flagship event of the programme: “New Italian Stage in the World”, an evening of theatre that brings together the vitality of Italy’s new dramaturgy with the vision and talent of leading Lebanese women directors.

Conceived within the framework of the Riccione Prize, Italy’s most prestigious and historic award for playwriting, the project offers a glimpse into a new generation of authors whose works experiment with form, language, and theme, reflecting on human relationships in our changing contemporary world.

For the first time in Lebanon, these Italian plays are presented in Lebanese Arabic translation and entrusted to the artistry of female directors, some of international renown, who infuse the texts with new layers of interpretation and resonance. This collaboration gives rise to a unique dialogue between Italian and Lebanese cultural landscapes, where language and theatre converge.

Programme:

  • Filomela by Fulvia Cipollari
    Directed by Hanan Aj Ali
With Rita Hayek  and Rodney El Haddad
  • Il tempo è slogato (Time Out of Joint) by Jacopo Giacomoni
    Directed by Aliya Khalidi
With Reefat Torbay and Tony Farah.
  • Tappeto rosso (Red Carpet) by Giulia Trivero
    Directed by Michelle Zalloua
With Jana Abi Ghosn, Pamela El Hachem, Aly Harkous.
  • Gateway by Eliana Rotella
    Dana Mikhail
With Danielle Davie, Wesam Dallati, Jawad Nawfal

“New Italian Stage in the World” becomes a true intercultural workshop, where Italian words, transposed into Lebanese Arabic, take on new life and meaning through different sensibilities. It demonstrates how theatre can be a space of encounter, translation and transformation, while fully embodying the spirit of Italophonia: a language that lives, reinvents itself, and thrives beyond borders.
