TAVIANI BROTHERS RETROSPECTIVE | SCREENING OF “THE NIGHT OF THE SHOOTING STARS” [LA NOTTE DI SAN LORENZO]

La notte di San Lorenzo

On a calm summer night beneath a sky full of stars, a woman begins telling her son a story from long ago, during the Second World War. The date is August 10, 1944. In the Tuscan countryside, the residents of the village of San Martino are forced to flee—their homes have been rigged with explosives by retreating German troops. Their only hope is to reach the American lines, a symbol of liberation and freedom. But the journey is filled with hardship, including a fierce battle against fascist forces in the middle of a wheat field. Yet the American troops are closing in, and soon the village is liberated. The people of San Martino can finally return to their homes, free at last.
