Pietro Morlacchi, a Swiss flute player and composer, is known especially for some compositions on operatic fantasies and for songlike themes, including “Il Pastore Svizzero” [The Swiss Shepherd].
Although sometimes people tend to erroneously confer the paternity of this composition to the artist Francesco Morlacchi (1784-1841), it actually comes from the pen of Pietro Morlacchi (1828-1868). In this brilliant theme with variations, Morlacchi combines the belcanto of the Italian melodrama to a brilliant, explosive, festive and carefree virtuosity. In addition to existing piano and orchestral version, it has also undergone a series of arrangements for various ensembles, including the band ensemble, for its lively freshness.
