Participation of the Italian Cultural Institute with the following films: • Il Racconto dei Racconti [Tale of tales] by Matteo Garrone – 29/01/2016, 10:15pm – 4/02/2016, 5:30pm A 2015 film co-writen, co-produced and directed by Matteo Garrone, at his very first film in English language, with Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones and John C. Reilly. It is a screen adaptation based on a collection of tales by Neapolitan poet and courtier Giambattista Basile, Pentamerone or Lo cunto de li cunti. Published posthumously between 1634 and 1636, it contains the earliest versions of famous fables like Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, that has inspired many authors including the Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault. The film contains three tales are that have been freely adapted from the collection of tales, intertwined and narrated with a touch of artistic license: La Cerva Fatata (The Enchanted Doe), La Pulce (The Flea), La Vecchia Scorticata (The Flayed Old Lady). • Youth by Paolo Sorrentino 28/01/2016 7:30pm – 2/02/2016, 10:15pm A 2015 Italian comedy–drama film written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. It is the director’s second English language film, and stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as best friends who reflect on their lives while vacationing in the Swiss Alps. It is a story of the eternal struggle between age and youth, the past and the future, life and death, commitment and betrayal. The cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, and Jane Fonda. •Il nome del figlio [The name of the son] by Francesca Archibugi Lunedì 1/02/2015, 5:30pm – 5/02/2016, 8:00pmA 2015 film, directed by Francesca Archibugi, with Alessandro Gassman, Micaela Ramazzotti, Valeria Golino, Luigi Lo Cascio, Rocco Papaleo, Julia Salerno. It is the adaptation of the play Le Prénom, by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, from which the French film Dinner with friends was drawn. Five friends meet for what should be an enjoyable evening but a question about the name of the son that two of them are going to have unleashes quarrels and reopens old wounds. Within the “European Comedy Classics” section of the European Film Festival, screening of the classic Italian movie: • In the name of Italian people by Dino Risi / Saturday, January 30th, 10:15 pm In the Name of the Italian People [In nome del popolo Italiano] is a 1971 Italian comedy-drama film directed by Dino Risi. It represents a frighteningly realistic, ruthless and grotesque reflection about the crisis of the Italian judiciary and the growing phenomenon of corruption of those years. A spotless magistrate is investigating the death of a young junkie and follows a trail which leads him to a businessman, who tries by all means to hinder him. While the city exults for a football victory, the magistrate, who discovered the innocence of the suspect, decides nonetheless to proceed against him, by destroying the proof of his innocence, to strike through him every rotten thing of an irredeemably corrupt society. On the quatercentenary of Shakespeare’s death, screening of: • The taming of the Shrew by Franco Zeffirelli / Monday, February 1st, 10:15 pm The Taming of the Shrew is a 1967 film based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare about a courtship between two strong-willed people. The film was directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as Shakespeare’s Kate and Petruchio. Padova, end of the 16th century. Baptista Minola is attempting to marry off his two daughters; however, he will marry off his youngest, Bianca only if someone will marry his eldest, Katharina. Katharina is an ill-tempered shrewish woman but a lusty young nobleman, Petruchio, takes on the challenge of taming and marrying her. A subplot involves the wooing of Bianca by several suitors including handsome Lucentio, foppish Hortensio, and elderly Gremio.
