Presentation of the Arabic translation of
OPS! 20 Unexpected Events that Changed Evolution and History
by Telmo Pievani and Andrea Valente- with Reefat Torbay
Notre Dame du Mont Carmel School – Fanar

As part of the 25th Italian Language Week in the World, devoted to the theme “Italophonia: Language Beyond Borders”, the Italian Cultural Institute of Beirut is delighted to present the Arabic translation of OPS! 20 Unexpected Events that Changed Evolution and History, authored by the philosopher of science Telmo Pievani and Andrea Valente, with illustrations by Sualzo.

Addressed above all to a younger audience, the book employs a light, witty tone whilst offering profound reflections on the role of chance in the history of life and of the universe. Through twenty extraordinary “turning points”, the authors reveal how nothing is predetermined and how even the smallest gesture, or the most fortuitous event, may give rise to decisive transformations.

OPS! thus guides readers on a journey from the Big Bang to the most minute details of everyday existence, unveiling an evolution that does not follow a linear or perfect design but advances through diversions, trials, adaptations and unforeseen outcomes. In this perspective, obstacles become stimuli for creativity, and imperfections are reinterpreted as sources of uniqueness and innovation.

The event will be enriched by the reading in Arabic of selected passages by the renowned Lebanese actor Reefat Torbay, whose voice will lend vibrancy and resonance to the text, offering students an immersive experience of discovery and imagination.

A celebration of science, literature and cultural dialogue, showing how Italian, through translation and reinterpretation, truly becomes a language beyond borders.
