O Oriens is one of the seven Advent antiphons also called "O" antiphons (from the vocative of the incipit), many of which, singed polyphonically in the form of a motet, came to us from the Eastern Mediterranean through the Codex of Cyprus. The Codex is a fifteenth-century manuscript, preserved in Turin, which collects anonymous music influenced by the French Ars Nova, since the Lusignano family, before the Venetian conquest of 1489, dominated the island. The concert is conceived as an imaginary dialogue between the anonymous composers of Cyprus and Matteo Da Perugia, the first chapel master of the Milan Cathedral. His work has been similarly transmitted almost by a single manuscript (preserved in Modena), probably compiled during the first two decades of the fifteenth century, just as the oriental scribes wrote the motets of the Franco-Cypriot court.
